Developing Dominica as the World’s Adventure Capital

The Commonwealth of Dominica has long been known for its rugged beauty and unique touristic offerings, but recently the island has emerged as a top destination for thrill seekers and nature lovers.

With funding for environmental protections provided by its Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme, Dominica is likely to be a strong nature destination for future generations of adventurers.

Cable car as a connection to environmental adventures

Dominica possesses a verdant, untouched beauty, and the country is being continually developed to make its unrivalled landscape more accessible to everyone.

A key enabler of this continued development is the CBI Programme, particularly the cable car. The upcoming Dominica cable car will be the world’s largest, breaking records in its mission to connect travellers to Dominica’s stunning Boiling Lake.

The cable car will minimise the travel time to the Boiling Lake from around 6-8 hours to 20 minutes, making this journey more accessible to everyone. The Boiling Lake is the world’s second largest hot spring, and access to its bubbling beauty is likely to bring in triple the number of visitors to Dominica.

A geothermal wonder, the Boiling Lake has already attracted hikers, but now everyone will be able to enjoy the stunning lake without having to undertake a demanding hike.

CBI Programme has driven Dominica’s development

Dominica’s CBI Programme is funding this massive infrastructural project, which has already created diverse job opportunities for Dominicans.

As the leading CBI Programme, Dominica has set the standard for utilising CBI as a method of development. Namely, the Economic Diversification Fund (EDF) was established to support socio-economic initiatives with the aim of driving national development.

Now, Dominica stands as a leading Caribbean state which a diversified economy, not only relying upon agricultural output but also offering a modern economy centered around ecotourism and services.

For adventure seekers and nature lovers, Dominica offers the opportunity to see an environment unlike any other.

Adventure travel as a rising interest for millennial travellers

According to Euronews, millennials (the generation born between 1981 and 1996) are particularly interested in adventure travel. Normally an expectation of the youngest generation, millennials have bucked the trend and continued their interest in adventure travel as they have reached their thirties and forties.

Dominica has much to offer for the adventurous traveler. The island’s lush and verdant rainforests contrast with its striking volcanic peaks. Stunningly intense waterfalls and dramatic coastlines add to Dominica’s unique environmental offering.

Hikes near volcanoes and rugged cliffs, and across the unique, black beaches make for a once-in-a-lifetime experience for travellers itching for something more than the classic beach holiday experience.

For example, adventurers can attempt Dominica’s 14-stage, 115-mile (185km) Waitukubuli National Trail, known as the Caribbean’s first long-distance hiking route. The route begins in the south of the island, at Scott’s Head, and ends in the island’s north, at Cabrits National Park.

Travelers can kayak across Dominica’s rivers or explore the island’s hidden coves, likely to spot much of the island’s biodiversity, including plants and animals native only to Dominica.

Whale watching is popular in Dominica, too. As Discover Dominica notes, ‘Dominica’s sheer underwater drop-offs create deep sheltered bays along its western coastline – the perfect haven for the Sperm Whale to breed and calve.’

Future of adventure travel in Dominica

Dominica’s future is bright, with a strong political and cultural emphasis on environmental preservation, aided by the CBI Programme. For keen adventurers, Dominica offers the perfect balance of rugged landscape and stunning biodiversity.

The CBI Programme has aided in protecting this unique natural environment, while also protecting the rich cultural heritage which is intertwined with the island’s fascinating natural landscape.

CBI has aided in diversifying Dominica’s economy into the ecotourism sector, funding ecohotels and renewable energy which create jobs, drive investment and aid the service sector of the economy.

A key enabler of Dominica’s development, the CBI Programme has enabled global adventure travel to the country in a way that gives back to the natural environment and Dominica’s citizens.
